The 70th Republic Day will witness a first in Indian history. This year, an all-women contingent will be marching and saluting the President at Rajpath for Republic Day. The contingent comprises of 146 members and hails from the Assam Rifles unit. If you thought this is amazing, hold your horses because there’s more to it.
Some of the women in this contingent who will be marching at the Republic Day parade were recruited on compassionate grounds. They are family members of soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. Some of these Mahila Jawans also shared their recruitment stories with a leading daily and they’ll fill your heart with pride and love.
Major Khusboo Kanwar will be leading the Mahila Jawan’s contingent. She said,
For the first time in history, a women contingent of the paramilitary will be marching on the majestic Rajpath. The women soldiers of the force are no less than their men counterparts!
Another jawan, Gayatri Sharma, said she was recruited after her father passed away in 2001. He, too, was an Assam Rifles jawan. She was just three years old at the time of his death, about which she said,
I got a letter from the Assam Rifles to join the force. I will perform my duty with full dedication for my country just like my father. I feel honoured to be a part of the Republic Day contingent.
Sunita Thapa, another member of the contingent, revealed that it was her husband’s dream of serving the country and she will be able to carry it forward only by becoming a part of it. She has a five-year-old son and an extremely supportive family. She said,
The entire family is proud of me and I am proud of the Assam Rifles.
