Many Bollywood celebrities are considered to be youth icons as they influence the lives of their fans in some way or the other. Not only that but also the decision they make, serve as an inspiration to not just fans but their colleagues too. So, when a superstar like Deepika Padukone takes a step towards bringing a fundamental change, it is sure to catch a lot of eyes. It also motivates many others who look up to her.
While it is important to filter out the noise and not be easily inspired by everything we see on social media, it is also crucial to take a few lessons when it truly matters. I am sure you’re aware of the significant and long-pending changes that the Indian film industry and our society needs. There are many issues that have come to light in recent times including equal opportunities and pay parity across genders. In the past year, we saw many celebs come forward and take a stand as well. At a recent book launch event, Deepika revealed the step she took when she faced pay disparity too.
A fan club took to Twitter to share a video of the actress from a panel discussion where she can be seen saying:
I know my track record, I know what I am worth. I know his films haven’t been doing as well as my films have been doing. So, it made absolutely no sense. I was okay to say no to that film based on that one thing because I just thought it was unfair. Today, I am ready to take those steps or measures or decisions for myself because I want to be able to sleep peacefully at night. I don’t think I’d be able to live with the thought of knowing that I’ve been a part of a film, had the same creative contribution or bringing the same sort of value to the film and being underpaid.

Deepika and her philanthropic work towards various causes has always been encouraging to many. While it is sad to know that an actress of such stature has also faced an issue like the wage gap, it certainly puts the intensity of the problem in perspective. It is great to see Deepika take such a step and set an example for her fellow actors.
The wage gap isn’t a problem that is restricted to Bollywood and it is only with one person, one bold step at a time, that we can correct the patriarchal ways of our society.
