Today is a big day for India. As you probably already know, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code has been finally overturned and we’re over the moon! On this day, we thought we’d help you celebrate this with a few movies that showcase the love and struggles that the LGBTQIA+ community has faced. Here they are:
1. Carol (2015)
This is about the love story dwelling between an aspiring photographer and an older woman in the ’50s.
2. Brokeback Mountain (2005)
This one is about a relationship between two cowboys and how it is forbidden in their town.
3. Call Me By Your Name (2017)
Set in the ’80s, this story is about an affair between a young student and an older man who works with his father.
4. Love, Simon (2018)
This story is about a boy named Simon who’s kept his sexuality hidden. When that secret is in jeopardy, he has to face the truth and prepare to reveal.
5. The Danish Girl (2015)
This movie is partly inspired by the story of the Danish artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener who’re married and learn about Lili’s journey as a transgender.
6. Blue Is The Warmest Color (2013)
This movie is about Adèle, a young girl who is on the journey to explore herself. She tries to date men but is not really interested in them. She then meets Emma, who she eventually confides in and Emma helps her confront her sexuality and then they grow fond of each other.
So, today, celebrate the freedom of this community and let’s also do our bit by not succumbing to misconceptions about them. After all, #LoveIsLove!
