While social media is something that can be put to great use, it’s also proven to have a rather dark side. From creating a need to have a picture perfect life to trolling and cyberbullying, the dark side to social media is all but obvious. But, as it is with everything in life, there is the good and the bad. Here are 5 Hollywood movies that we highly recommend you watch, that pretty much cover it all.

1. Eighth Grade

This is really a beautiful movie. It follows the story of an eighth grader as she’s trying to get past the last week of school. The entire journey and also the ups and downs she faces is like an emotional rollercoaster. Social media is like her coping mechanism and the movie shows you how it’s become something that has most teen wrapped up in it. Not to mention the performances by the actors especially the lead is absolutely fantastic.

2. Cyberbully

It’s funny how this movie predicted something that is rampant across social media. The movie shows you just how severely trolling and cyberbullying can affect someone. It’s a real eye-opener and shows you just how vulnerable people, especially kids can be to these things. While we’ve mentioned the older version, the one starring Massie Williams is also a really great watch.

3. Men, Women & Children

While the movie has a rather slow pace to it, it quite clearly shows you many different perspectives on the usage of social media. Each perspective is interesting and it makes you think about what it’s like to be on all parts of the spectrum.

4. Nerve

This movie is the perfect example of how fast things can go from harmless fun to out of control when it comes to social media. Although this movie revolves around a game that people are playing, the message behind it is all but clear. It shows you just how much of an impact social media can have (referring to the ending).

5. The Social Network

No list of social media movies can be complete without this masterpiece. Albeit based on real-life events, the movie is still something that can show you the pros and cons of social media. Brought to life with amazing visuals and an almost perfect cast, this movie based on Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg shows you how it all started.

To say that social media is the evilest thing ever would be a huge stretch. It has the ability to do a lot of good and not just for people, but businesses also. However, it is important to be aware of just how quickly things can go downhill and also realise how much is real and how much of it is just made up. Not everything you see on the internet is real and it’s important to remember that.
