There are those moments when the law finally stands up for art and Indian cinema breathes a sigh of relief, this is one such instance. Earlier last week, reports of A West Bengal Congress member filing a complaint against Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the makers of Sacred Games for a comment that Nawaz’s character passes on our former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi surfaced on the internet. The petition that was filed demanded the removal of the derogatory comments made on our late prime minister. But yesterday, the Delhi High Court had the best reaction to this petition.
Here are some of the things they had to say:
A bench of high court judges questioned the petitioner as to:
- Why the actors were made a part of their case in the first place?
- How this petition could be upheld when the episodes are already online?
- How the court was supposed to intervene in this matter?
- Is there a need for a certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification?
- What’s the urgency, since all the episodes are aired anyways?
Having said all of the above, the court has kept a date for a detailed hearing of the 19th of July and mentioned that no new episodes will be aired until the hearing.
Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi’s son, had taken to Twitter to express his opinion on the comments in the web series,
Well, we don’t see why the other Congress members should be worried now.
It’s a fictional series. Live and let live, y’all!
