We are ruining our planet and global warming is a proof of that. According to The Guardian, one of the biggest resulting threats to cities around the world is the sea-level rise, caused by the expansion of water at higher temperatures and melting ice sheets on the north and south poles. Scientists at the non-profit organization called Climate Central estimate that 275 million people worldwide live in areas that will eventually be flooded at 3C of global warming. Cities like Osaka, Alexandria, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, and Miami will be most affected.
Scientists have tried to find a solution to this issue and designer and material scientist Jun Kamei has innovatively found a solution for humans living underwater with the help of 3D-printing. He devised artificial gills called Amphibio that’ll help humans breathe underwater. It lets oxygen through but stops water from entering the lungs.
This although, is not a finished product and there is still a lot of changes that need to be made to it before it hits the market.
The fact that we even have to device something to survive underwater is pretty alarming as it is. We hope we don’t ever have to actually use these artificial gills. Till then, let’s do our bit by helping the environment.
