The #MeToo campaign was started by Tarana Burke in 2006 for women to show unity when it comes to sexual harassment. The hashtag went viral after Alyssa Milano used it to support Rose McGowan’s allegations of sexual harassment against Harvey Weinstein. A lot of movies and T.V. shows surrounding the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement have been made but after the movement went viral, many more were added to the list. Here are 5 examples.
1. Citizen Rose
Citizen Rose is a five part docu-series by Rose McGowan herself post her allegations. It documents her experiences and her activism to spread her message of bravery, art, joy and survival.
2. The Tale
The Tale, an HBO movie and now available on Hotstar, centres around the same subject. Based on a true story, this tale of childhood trauma and sexual abuse is a deep, personal look at a woman coming to terms with her past, and the lengths to which she goes in an attempt to rebuild her life.
3. Room
A mother, Joy and her son are held captive in a room for years by the biological father. Joy’s son is born and brought up in the room. The movie shows the trauma that she goes through whilst protecting her son, how she struggles to get him to see the outside world and hopes to get out of there.
4. #MeToo, Now What?
#MeToo, Now What? is a talk show hosted by Zainab Salbi where she and her guests have authentic conversations on sexual harassment. The show also explores how men can take part in this discussion.
5. The Handmaid’s Tale
This television series explores the theme of women who are subjugated to misogyny in a patriarchal society and the various attempts made by them to gain freedom from it. Based on the 1885 novel of the same name, the story revolves around June, a concubine to a Gileadan officer and his wife. She is forced to work as per their strict terms and conditions and hopes to be free one day to meet her daughter.
