We love seeing new makeup trends. Not only do they inspire us to break out of our regular beauty routines, but also end up creating true works of art. Sometimes however, these fads involve complicated techniques or require hours of work – which turns out to be a huge bummer for beauty junkies like ourselves. Thus, when we spotted two of this season’s hottest trends, we were super excited. Apart from the fact that they are really easy to imitate, they also involve the use of unexpected shades! Check out the details of each trend below.
1. Bright Eyes
From fresh green to summertime yellow, there isn’t a colour that’s not in fashion at the moment. Our favourite celebrities and models have been spotted with vivid hues across their lids in various degrees of pigmentation. Kim Kardashian West sported a fierce look with an all-out wash of bright blue, whilst Sonam Kapoor Ahuja dazzled at Cannes with a pop of yellow towards the inner corners of her eyes.
If these looks are too tame for you, there’s a bolder version available! Neon eye makeup has been making waves on both, the runway and on Instagram. From artistic strokes to graphic wings, this trend aims to stand out. Whilst orange is usually the colour of choice, we’ve seen streaks of lime green and hot pink around too.
The key to these looks is a good eye shadow primer, which will help the pigment stand out and lock the colour in place. To ensure that the spotlight stays on your eyes, it’s best to keep the rest of your face muted. A coat or two of jet black mascara will further enhance your look.

2. Draping
When Emilia Clarke revealed her look for the 2018 Met Gala, our minds went straight to Rihanna’s 2017 Met Gala look. Why? Because both these celebrities sported an intense flush of colour on their cheeks, in a very interesting way.
Dubbed as ‘draping’, this fad is a new way to contour your face. Rather than using a matte bronzer however, draping involves the use of a heavy amount of blush or highlighter. Essentially, you sculpt yourself by applying the product along the angles of your face. The result still gives you a chiselled effect like traditional contouring, but also freshens up your complexion due to the addition of colour. Whilst you can use a single shade, most makeup artists create a gradient by using a mix of soft and darker hues.
For those of you who want to go the extra mile, take a leaf out of Rihanna’s book. The singer/ beauty mogul debuted her Killawat Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo in ‘Mimosa Sunrise/ Sangria Sunset’ at the 2017 Gala. As you can see, the metallic hue extends all the way up to her temples and gives off a blinding, yet gorgeous glow.
Whilst you will require a dense, sculpting brush and a pigmented blush or highlighter, it’s also really important to have a smooth and flaw-free base. To stop your look from going overboard, opt for a matte foundation. For the finishing touch, add a coat of sheer lipstick or gloss.
