I wondered for the longest time why we didn’t have enough movies made on female friendships. We watched and celebrated male friendships in movies like Amar Akbar Anthony and Dil Chahta Hai, but the minute a film about three friends like Aisha was made, we were quick to chide it saying ‘gosh, how boring’. Of course, there are multiple reasons for this – blame the patriarchy, blame our mindsets, blame directors and actors for shunning the content that came to them? I don’t know. Veere Di Wedding went through its fair share of struggles – a film about women eventually had to get a female producer to back it but man, I’m only glad this happened because this is a film that was waiting to be made, that needed to be made.
Veere Di Wedding is a film that celebrates the friendship and lives of its four protagonists. They’ve been thick as thieves since they were little and continue to be just as close despite living in different corners of the world. Directed by Shashanka Ghosh, and written by Nidhi Mehra and Mehul Suri, it very realistically explores relationships and lives of 25+ somethings. You think it’s a film just about a wedding but it brilliantly touches upon socially relevant topics and mind you, in the most entertaining manner.
Here are five things we absolutely loved about the movie.
1. It’s real
If there’s one thing I loved about this film, it’s that I could relate to it throughout. As much as people criticised the trailer for having too many cuss words, the truth is that the four girls on screen were exactly like what my friends and I are. From their conversations to seeing how fiercely loyal they were to each other, the film will remind you of your Veeres. It also put across one point brilliantly – although we’ve been fed stories about the ‘happily ever after’, it actually needs a lot of patience and work to keep it ‘happy’.
It also brings to the fore all the drama that goes on with Indian weddings – from the new relationships to excited parents – it’s something that’ll make you giggle on the inside.
2. The casting
Wait… Just look at these women, will you?
Phew! I can’t think of anybody else who could’ve played these parts better. Kareena Kapoor Khan plays Kalindi – a girl from a broken family, who doesn’t believe in marriages, yet is going ahead because she loves the boy. Sonam Kapoor plays Avni, a divorce lawyer, who wants to get married – it doesn’t help that she has a mum obsessed with the thought of it. Sakshi played by Swara Bhasker is an extremely wealthy woman, who drinks her tequila by the litre, swears like there’s no tomorrow (we all have that one friend), thanks to her marriage being on the brink of failure. Shikha Talsania holds her own and is absolutely refreshing as Meera – a mother frustrated with her life, at the same time, seeking the acceptance of her family.
Of course, we’re going to take a minute to talk about Sumeet Vyas and how cute he was in the film! His versatility is commendable and he played the character with so much ease, we couldn’t help but fall in love with him. And hey, have you noticed how good Kareena and him look together? Here’s hoping somebody casts them in another film. Karan Johar, are you listening?
Vishwas Kinni as Bhandari was hilarious and annoyingly charming as the grooms best friend. Sukesh Arora, Vivek Mushran and Ekavali Khanna too were great and definitely didn’t go unnoticed. It is at the end of the day, the supporting cast that keeps the film together.
3. Music
Right from Tareefan to Veere – the music will have you groovin’ along. I also fell in love with Aa Jao Naa and have had it on loop ever since.
4. Fashion
This goes without saying. If the film has Rhea Kapoor‘s name to it, you know that the girls are going to look their best! And we kid you not, they really did. My favourite has got to be Swara Bhasker – she hasn’t looked better! This film is going to set a lot of trends and one of which I think is that of the understated bride. Kareena Kapoor looked absolutely gorgeous in her wedding lehenga and I loved that it wasn’t gaudy as most outfits are in the movies. Less is more.
It’s really easy on the eyes when every frame has good looking people dressed to perfection hehe.
5. Finally, a film that focuses on women!
You know that we at MM love to celebrate women and are all about empowering each other. Obviously, we were thrilled to see a film like this on the big screen, where mainstream actors played unabashed characters with such abandon. Female friendships are beautiful and is honestly not talked about enough – there’s nothing better than having your girlfriends by your side, amirite?
All in all, this was an entertaining watch – it’ll keep you smiling throughout and I promise you, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re a man or woman, you’ll be able to relate to this film just as much as I did.
