In India today, there is a shortage of blood by more than two million pints and counting. For certain treatments and accident emergencies, blood is a constant requirement. While there are a lot of blood donation drives, the quantity collected is not even close to what is required. Sure blood donation is not a compulsion but it’s important that we realise just how essential it is. Here are some reasons that you should think about.
1. Helps Save Lives
It’s probably the obvious reason why you should donate blood but it’s something that we constantly need a reminder of. For every pint of blood, you save three lives. You might not wear a cape or be a superhero, but you are saving lives with a simple act of kindness.
2. It Has Many Health Benefits
Not only is donating blood good for others, it also helps you out in more ways than one. While it provides a psychological upliftment, it also is known to be of great benefit to the person who is donating the blood. It helps keep control of the iron levels in the body and also helps in the production of new blood cells.
3. It’s Like A Free Health Check-Up
When donating blood, you also get the benefit of getting a free health check-up done. The donor is able to get information about his blood pressure, pulse and other vital signs that show the status of your overall health. On an average, a person can donate blood about five to six times in a year. So, that means you get a physical examination done those many times, which is always a good thing.
4. It Has A Great Feel Good Factor
Donating blood is known to relieve stress and make you feel a lot better, psychologically. It’s a great feeling and plus you get to take a little time off work or college. It goes a long way and knowing you may have helped someone in need is great. Also, did you know that donating blood can burn up to 650 calories?
5. Because We Can, We Should
A lot of us want to do something good but at times, we feel our hands are tied. Donating blood doesn’t require you to make a commitment. It’s the best way you can give back and be a part of something much bigger. It’s important and being able to save a life is something that will always make you feel great.
A lot of us just shrug off the importance and need of blood donating drives. No one’s going to force you to do it. It’s something that needs to come from within (literally) and even it takes just one person to make a huge difference in someone’s life. Do note that World Blood Donor Day is on June 14th, so head out there and be a part of the change.
