Moving into a new house can be a pretty hectic task. While it is also a source of excitement and celebration, it can be stressful and overwhelming at times. Whether it’s your first move or your tenth, the key to staying out of the stress zone is planning and organisation. A well thought out plan will help you overcome pretty much any last minute craziness. That being said, before you take the final plunge, here are a few essential things you need to do.
1. Lists And Labels
It’s essential to maintain a list of everything you’re packing. This allows you to keep track of what’s moving with you and also ensures you get everything, without misplacing it. Another important thing to do is to make sure you label everything! If you’ve got a lot of stuff, it’s crucial that you label it as it makes the whole process of unpacking much easier.
2. Lighten The Load
Moving into a new house is usually the best time to get rid of things you don’t need anymore. Spend a few extra hours sorting through everything and make sure you’re only carrying the things you absolutely want. If there are things you can’t carry or don’t want to carry, give them away or try and do a moving away sale. It will help you lighten your load and even get you some pocket money.
3. Change The Locks
Safety should always be a priority. The first thing you should do is make sure you change the locks and get duplicate keys while you’re at it. If you’re on rent, you might want to give your landlord a heads up and let them know that you’d prefer to change them. Sometimes, they might even agree to cover the cost or sometimes even split it.
4. Check The Plumbing
Before you move into your new place, make sure you check all the plumbing. If you find any leaks or cracks bring it to the buildings or your landlord’s attention. Even if it’s something as small as a broken tap, make sure you inform whoever needs to be and get it replaced. The last thing you want is to be stranded with a leak or without water.
5. Connections
It’s always a great idea to take a day before you move in, to set up everything in your new place. Things like the wifi, gas connections, etc. can take up a lot of time. So, make sure you do them beforehand because when you move in, you’re going to have a lot on your plate and may not be able to get to it for a while. Also, it’s great to know your neighbours too. Engage in a friendly conversation with them and get to know them better.
6. Pest Control
Honestly, the last thing you want is an attack from roaches, rats and other creepy crawlies. Before you move into your new place, make sure you get a professional pest control done. This is will help spare you from the nightmare of having to deal with all this after moving in. A little future planning never hurts.
7. Pack A First Night Box
A lot of people who are moving for the first time don’t realise just how hectic and stressful unpacking can be. It’s pretty tough to get through everything in just one day. That’s why it’s important to pack a first night box. This box has all the essentials you’ll need to help you get through the first day. It works miracles and allows you to rest easy when you can’t go on anymore.
