Horror movies aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, that is for sure. While some people love it, there are those who can’t stand the idea of them. Over the years, the genre has evolved quite a bit. While some movies rely on shabby jump scares and mindless gore, others are actually pretty good and have intense storylines. That being said, over the decades, there have been movies that were criminally underrated, even though they were really good. Here are a few of them that you must watch if you haven’t already.
1. It Follows (2015)
With a rather interesting premise, this movie has a bunch of teenagers that start getting followed or haunted. It all starts when carefree teen Jay has sex with her new boyfriend. While it sounds like a really bad STD, the movie is actually pretty good and creepy all while not overplaying anything.
2. The Witch (2015)
Set in 1630 New England, this movie kicks off with a struggling farming household falls into chaos when their youngest son just disappears in a matter of seconds. They believe that it is a witch who has grabbed their son and from there all hell breaks loose. The beauty of this film is actually in the way it’s paced. It is slow and has sudden grotesque scenes that shake you up.
3. The Final (2010)
What happens when the outcasts and the bullied decide to fight back? Well, you get this gem of a movie. A bunch of bullied kids decide to follow a creepy guy and take revenge on their tormentors. This takes high school revenge to a whole new level and is actually pretty bloody. So if blood and gore is not your thing, we highly recommend skipping over this one.
4. Session 9 (2001)
This movie is pretty high on the scary scale. When things start going sideways for the asbestos removal crew in an abandoned mental asylum, they are confronted with things they didn’t expect. This movie is actually now considered a cult classic and has the perfect setting for a psychological thriller.
5. Don’t Breathe (2016)
If you ever thought that robbing a blind man was a piece of cake, you might want to rethink that. When three kids break into the house of a blind veteran, they think it will be easy money. While he may be blind, he sure as hell isn’t helpless. This movie goes from goofy to spine-chilling in a matter of minutes and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
6. Last Shift (2014)
When a rookie cop goes for his first solo shift in a closing station, things get wild when he starts facing things from what could only be a nightmare. While it is a lower budget movie, it still succeeds at scaring the crap out of you! The ending is something that will literally leave you with chills.
7. The Taking Of Deborah Logan (2014)
What starts off as a normal looking movie about a student film based on Alzheimer’s, quickly turns into something else. What makes this movie so memorable is how terrifying it actually is. It moves into a possession movie almost seamlessly and is so well-acted that you believe every second of the suspense.
8. Grave Encounters (2011)
While found footage movies became all the rage, this 2011 horror movie manages to stand apart from the garbage. What starts off looking like an average B-grade horror flick quickly turns into a monster beyond comprehension. Suffice to say, you won’t be getting any sleep after watching this one.
9. Would You Rather (2012)
While from the looks of the movie, it may look like a Saw rip-off, it’s actually way more psychologically thrilling. Obviously, it has a lot of gore but this movie can actually make you start stressing for the characters. It throws you in so deep you start questioning what you would do. It is the perfect balance between terrifying and suspenseful.
10. Deliver Us From Evil (2014)
If you’re looking for a horror movie that is jumpy, creepy and bloody, look no further. When a police officer teams up with a cleric to take on the immoral forces, they quickly see their worlds spin out of control. While trying to solve mysterious murders, how quickly they descend into chaos is something you won’t even realise. It’s gruesome yet the story is beautifully told.
