If you haven’t already heard, there is a certain Instagram handle called @dietprada who has been calling out labels who are allegedly copying designs from other brands. This week we discovered that someone has created an Indian version called @dietsabya, giving us info on which designer duped whom. This has (very obviously) caused an outrage amongst the designers who have been incriminated. But we do have to give it to brainchild behind @dietsabya for their amazing recall factor. The witty captions and savage pictorial details is our current lunch table convo (and despite the backlash, it doesn’t look like they’re stopping any time soon).
Check out the accused here:
The Alexander McQueen Dupe
A corset with a buckled-back, exactly like that of McQueen’s—Coincidence or inspiration?
The Shantanu & Nikhil Dupe
It’s never too easy to trace back desi wear to a particular designer, but the case seen below speaks for itself.
The Heidi Klum Dupe
The Project Runway host was seen wearing this shimmy-worthy dress from Lorraine Schwartz in 2014, while Kriti was styled in an extremely similar one recently.
The Manish Arora Dupe
Any one of us could spot a Manish Arora design from a mile away. So, when we came across this skirt, it really got us thinking about the importance of safeguarding creativity.
The Shivan & Narresh Dupe
When one sees bold colours, tropical palettes, and holiday feels, you know it’s Shivan & Narresh. The question now is, are they the only ones who own this aesthetic?
Art has always been subjective—Whether we’re talking about paintings, fashion or music. Every individual translates it in their own way. Now, safeguarding an artistic idea seems rather difficult, which is why the past few months have been a little rough on the fashion industry. Instances of creative plagiarism were brought into the limelight with prime examples being, the Dior controversy with Elle India‘s January issue and the Instagram feud between designers Payal Khandwala and Wendell Rodricks.
Were these designs merely inspired by the biggest names in the industry or was it downright plagiarism? There is a fine line between the two. Tell us what you think this major IDGAF Instagram page in the comments below!
