Before we get down to know the reason behind why your lashes fall out, let’s start with the basics…
1. What are eyelashes?
Sensory hair whose sole purpose is to protect your eyes from sweat, dirt, dust, rubble and other micro particles. Eyelashes are made up of 10% water and 90% protein, like keratin and melanin. There are approximately 100-300 top lashes and 60-80 lashes on the bottom.
Fun fact: There are particles called Demodex that live in your lashes. These help keep your lash follicles clean and remove debris.
2. How they grow
There are 3 phases of lash growth:
- Anagen
The first stage—Where your hair grows a little everyday. This growth period lasts for about 30-40 days. - Catagen
The transition stage—This is when your hair follicles shrink, allowing the strands to extend towards the surface. This period lasts upto 3 weeks. - Telogen
The resting stage—Your lash hair last for about 2 weeks. They soon start to fall out after.
3. Why they fall out
Just like the hair on your head, your lash hair falls out naturally. They usually grow to about a third of the length of your eye, to protect it from debris, dirt and so on. So, it’s completely normal for about 1-6 lashes to fall out daily.
Psst, it mostly takes about 4-7 weeks for new lashes to grow back.
4. The solution
While there are certain ways to add depth and dimension to your natural lashes (like lash extensions and fillers), these aren’t always the right options for you in the long run.
