The 90th Annual Academy Awards this year was the most awaited night of Hollywood. Apart from all the stars that showed up in glamorous gowns, there was so much more that went down at the 2018 Oscars. Let’s fill you in real quick.
1. The Glittery Red Carpet
The red carpet was a fun one. Nichole Kidman and Sandra Bullock had a cute BFF moment together. Mary J. Blige told us that this was her first ever Oscars appearance and it is also her first nomination. How exciting! Another fun moment was when Chadwick Boseman from Black Panther yelled “Wakanda forever!” on the red carpet. Rita Morena wore the dress she wore to the Oscars in 1962. That’s 56 years ago, in case you need help counting.
2. The Funny Guy
Jimmy Kimmel was as funny as he usually is. He opened by telling us that the management at the Oscars said that their singular focus would be to present the correct envelope. This is regarding the Best Picture confusion from last year.He was also keeping track of the time the winners took to finish their speeches and lured them with prizes like jet skis and local trips. Hilarious!
3. Moving Performances
Mary J. Blige sang a moving song called Mighty River from the movie Mudbound. Common and Andra Day performed the nominated song Stand Up For Something from the movie Marshall. This got a standing ovation. Another moving performance was by Keala Settle when she sang This Is Me from The Greatest Showman.
4. The Victorious Ones
Apart from Gary Oldman winning the award for Best Actor, The Shape Of Water winning best picture and Guillermo Del Toro winning best director, there were many other winners that created history.
5. Emotional Tributes
The Oscars mourned the demise of various actors, including Indian actors Late Sridevi Kapoor and Late Shashi Kapoor apart from other Hollywood celebrities.
6. The #TimesUp Movement
Nominated candidates presenters and performers spoke up about the Times Up Movement. About equality in gender, race and other problems that need justice.
7. The Surprise!
We totally loved how Kimmel surprised the random crowd at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, who were tricked into watching the movie A Wrinkle in Time. So, he took along Gal Gadot, Guillermo del Toro, Margot Robbie, Kimmel’s sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez and more with baskets of fun treats to go surprise the audience. Kimmel asked a random audience member Mike Young to introduce the next presenters, Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph.
8. Frances McDormand‘s Inspiring Speech
She took to the stage to accept her award for the best performance in a female lead role for the movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and she spoke of women’s solidarity and the importance of women having a voice to tell their stories, of which there are many. She also mentioned the “inclusion rider” which is a clause in the actor’s contract to encourage diversity in a crew.
