Bollywood actress Jiah Khan, best known for her role in Nishabd, was found hanging at her Mumbai residence on June 3, 2013. Her mother Rabiya Khan claimed that the morning of her death, her daughter had returned from Sooraj’s house, where she had been staying since the past couple of days.
Sooraj was accused of abetting the suicide and after further investigation, the CBI alleged that he hid important information and fabricated certain facts. Although he was arrested a week after Jiah’s death, he was out on bail in a few days. Nearly 5 years later, Jiah’s mother is still fighting for justice for her daughter. She appealed to the High Court for a fresh probe by a special investigation team, as according to her, the CBI was wrong in concluding her daughter’s death as suicide and not homicide.
Her petition was initially rejected as the HC did not find any merit in her plea. However, she was eventually successful in bringing the case to court for trial – Sooraj has been booked under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (abettment of suicide). His trial starts today at a sessions court in Mumbai.
