The 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2018 just wrapped earlier today, and suffice to say it was a momentous occasion on many counts. This event, for all intensive purposes was the first time that the industry came together in solidarity post the disturbing and saddening events of last year. Through the unofficial #TimesUp campaign black dress code, this solidarity was visually apparent, but even more so through the supportive speeches and powerful statements made on stage.
The host, Seth Meyers pulled no punches and dove right in, mentioning Harvey Weinstein as well as Kevin Spacey and President Donald Trump as well. And there was even more loud and proud dialogue on women’s empowerment, gender equality, race equality and abuse. The times, they are a changin’ for sure. Here’s a look at the most powerful moments of this year’s Golden Globes.
1. First off, The Golden Globes turned 75 this year
On it’s 75th birthday, aka diamond jubilee, there was a signature cocktail Moet 75, served to the guests as well as diamond like accents on the centre pieces to honour the jubilee.
2. Oprah Winfrey became the first African American woman to be honoured with the Cecil B. Demille Award and gave the most powerful tear-jerker of a speech
She spoke about watching Sidney Poitier win the same award many years ago; she spoke of women’s rights and abuse, and of the dawn of better times ahead.
3. Seth Meyers delivered a great monologue and then Amy Poehler stole the show with her crack at him
While Meyers tackled the elephant in the room with tact and had everyone in splits, Amy Poehler showed why we love her by making a quip directed towards Meyers about mansplaining being part of the show.
4. Debra Messing gave an E! News Red Carpet interview where she called out pay disparity between men and women at E! itself as well as the rest of Hollywood
Debra Messing of Will And Grace spoke out against unequal pay in support of Catt Sadler, former E! News host who quit last month citing that her co-host Jason Kennedy made double her salary.
5. Big Little Lies won 4 out of their 6 nominations and Nicole Kidman spoke on abuse and empowerment
Nicole Kidman won the first award of the night for her role in HBO series Big Little Lies, the women-centric show also starring Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz and praised the work they did together. Also making it known that the idea to shine a light on issues like abuse is what artists like them do so as to keep the conversation going.
6. And finally, everyone, men and women alike made a public show of support to the #TimesUp campaign by wearing black outfits and pins that read #TimesUp
All the stars wore black to draw attention the sexual misconduct scandals that the entertainment industry is rife with. They also wore Times Up pins in support of the website started to help those who have been sexually assaulted or harrassed beyond the industry itself.
