2017 packed in a lot of big moments for Bollywood. While most of the big ticket movies didn’t live up to box-office collections, medium budget and high concept films turned out to be profitable for makers. Of course, Tiger Zinda Hai‘s mammoth opening and Bahubali: The Conclusion‘s record-breaking streak is proof that audiences still want to watch their movies on the big screen, but they’ve definitely become choosy. Which is a great thing!
But of course, Bollywood isn’t just about the films, a lot of other interesting things happened in the lives of the rich and the famous.
Here are the highlights –
1) We thought 2016 was bad for relationships, but 2017 too started on a sour note
Nandita Das and hubby Subodh Maskara got a divorce after 7 years of marriage.
The more headline grabbing divorce belonged to Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora Khan who parted ways after 19 years of marriage and a son. They remain cordial though and are often spotted together at dinners and parties.
Himesh Reshammiya and his estranged wife Komal divorced too. Himesh has been dating actress Sonia Kapoor for years now.
And of course, the most heartbreaking of them all – Adhuna and Farhan Akhtar who had announced their separation last year, got officially divorced this year.
2) Sonam Kapoor posted a photo with her boyfriend Anand Ahuja for the first time
They continue to give us relationship goals on a regular basis. Rumours of their engagement keep popping up here and there, but knowing that the actress is so refreshingly candid about her boyfriend, we will wait till she gives a statement herself.
3) Raees and Kaabil clashed at the box-office and there was a lot of chatter surrounding it
Actually Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan were pretty chill, but other people involved with the respective movies had some stuff to say.
4) Priyanka Chopra proved that she has access to Hermione Granger’s time turner
The superstar made her Hollywood debut with the Baywatch movie, presented an award at the Golden Globes, and was a delight on American talk shows! She has also signed three more Hollywood projects, is developing a TV series for ABC on Madhuri Dixit‘s life in the USA AND she’s currently shooting for the third season of Quantico. I’m tired by just writing about it.
5) Deepika Padukone made a splash in the West and retained her queenly status in India
Deepika made her high profile Hollywood debut with Vin Diesel in xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. To promote it, she made her presence felt at The Ellen Show and The Late Late Show With James Corden where she made Vin and James do the lungi dance. In India, she blew everyone’s minds with her look in Padmavati. Unfortunately the movie will not be released this year, but we’re sure when it does, she’ll sweep away all the awards and accolades.
6) Celebrated actor Om Puri passed away
Om Puri breathed his last on 6th January 2017.
7) Koffee With Karan continued to entertain us!
Season 5 started in 2016, and continued to stir shit up in 2017, primarily because of one episode.
8) Kajol’s cold war with Karan Johar continued… but what happened next made everyone happy.
The fight that started from the box-office clash of her husband Ajay Devgn‘s Shivaay and KJO‘s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016 and continued in 2017.
They made some disparaging statements about each other (some of them even made it to Karan’s biography) but then, after the arrival of KJO’s babies, they patched up. As simple as that, because they’re each other’s best friends yaar!
9) A lot of celebrities welcomed babies
Karan Johar became a parent to adorable twins, a boy and a girl called Yash and Roohi.
Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Kemmu welcomed baby Inaaya.
Esha Deol and Bharat Takhtani had a baby girl. Her name is Radhya.
Beyonce gave birth to twins Sir and Rumi Carter.
It doesn’t look like it, but Lisa Haydon became a mom to baby Zack this year.
Sunny Leone and her husband Daniel Webber adopted a girl and named her Nisha.
Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk named their baby Lea
10) Starlet Manasvi Mamgai was strangely involved in Donald Trump’s campaign in the United States
Last seen in the disastrous Action Jackson, Manasvi Mamgai seems to be thick with the 45th President of the United States who has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women.
11) Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan featured in a movie together after YEARS!
12) Lots of cool people got married
Neil Nitin Mukesh surprised everyone and tied the knot with Rukmini Sahay.
Zaheer Khan got hitched to long-time girlfriend Sagarika Ghatge.
Starlet Hrishita Bhatt married senior UN diplomat Anand Tiwari.
Riya Sen got married in a super-secret ceremony to her longtime boyfriend Shivam Tewari.
Aisha actress Amrita Puri married restaurateur Imrun Sethi in Bangkok
13) Harshvardhan Kapoor slammed an awards ceremony for giving the best debut male award to Diljit Dosanjh
It went on for a while and apologized soon after.
14) The attack on Padmavati began
It started with Sanjay Leela Bhansali getting assaulted, the sets being destroyed, rangolis being ruined, a bounty being put on Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s head and the postponement of one of the most exciting movies to an indefinite date.
It breaks my heart that we didn’t get to watch this film in 2017, we hope 2018 brings some cheer to the audience who LOVED the trailer.
15) Bollywood celebrities opened up about depression and alcoholism
Ileana D’Cruz spoke about being suicidal.
Pooja Bhatt opened up about her battle with alcoholism.
Parineeti Chopra revealed how depressed she was due to failure.
Kapil Sharma shared his thoughts on a recent bad period of his life.

17) And Taimur continued to rule our hearts
Both Taimur and Misha turned one this year and their birthday parties were pretty epic!
Also because Taimur and Misha were born around the same time and because Misha’s dad and Taimur’s mom dated once upon a time, the Indian internet became pretty obsessed with the idea that Misha and Taimur belong together. We’re gross.
18) Ranbir and Katrina continued to deal with their break-up in the public eye because of Jagga Jasoos promotions
They handled it perfectly though, even when Ranbir was accused of ‘mansplaining’ Katrina in interviews, the actress shut that down.
