Ayushmann Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar‘s upcoming movie Shubh Mangal Saavdhan has been in the news for all the right reasons. It openly talks about sex and problems that comes with it in a country like India where sex or even uttering the word is seen as a taboo. Remember Vicky Donor? It’s refreshing to see younger actors come forth and make relevant but fun movies.
Ahead of his upcoming release, he spoke with Mid-Day about pre-marital sex.
I endorse pre-marital sex. In our society, we encourage arranged marriage. Marriage is an important aspect of one’s life. It’s always good to test the waters before jumping in. What will the couple do if there’s a problem they learn about after getting hitched? In our film, the lead protagonists are in love, and support each other. But, that might not always be the case.
Exactly! And as expected, he received the most hilarious reactions. One of them being,
He donated so much sperm that now he can’t get it up!
But that’s exactly what they were going for – good trolling.
That’s exactly the reaction we wanted. This is good trolling. In a country where erectile dysfunction is a taboo subject, I am glad that we are putting it out there for the public to discuss it. After Vicky Donor, life is coming a full circle for me with this film. We are part of a progressive changing society. As young actors, the onus lies on us to choose subjects which must be talking points. Is our work of any value if we don’t have an opinion on things?
He also spoke about how the male ego is given too much importance.
The male ego is so unnecessarily important in patriarchal societies. When a woman cannot conceive, everyone has something to tell her. When a guy can’t get it up, it’s shoved under the carpet. Sexual health is important to a relationship. In this film, the girl is in love with the guy and we establish the fact that their relationship goes beyond the sexual act. But the girl is emphatic that she wants to have sex. In this society, chauvinism is mistaken for chivalry. It’s tough to change that. This film will trigger a change in the right direction. Can I just add that I love Ayushmann Khurrana? He makes so much sense all the time and is one of the few actors who actually talks about the most relevant things. Uff! Can’t wait to watch Shubh Mangal Saavdhan.
