You guys know about Pehredaar Piya Ki right? The show has a young boy, who might be 9 or 10 years old getting married to an 18 year old woman because he’s a young prince and his life is in danger. How will marriage save him? Well, his wife is also his bodyguard, because obviously a prince can’t afford a REAL bodyguard.
Anyway, this marriage of convenience is also trying to be passed off as cute and adorable but the damn thing is really problematic. The first episode itself had the boy stalking the woman and sneakily clicking her photos. Another episode had the two celebrate their ‘suhaag raat‘ by having a pillow fight. The makers also plan to send them for a honeymoon. You get the gist?
While the writer and the lead actress have tried their best to defend the show, even calling it progressive and about women’s rights, viewers have been enraged to say the least. A petition to ban this serial addressed to Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani on Change.org has gone viral.
The petition has made quite an impact as according to a report on IndiaToday.in and Smriti has taken a prompt action against the show. As per the article Irani has written to Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) and has asked them to take immediate action against the show, on priority basis.
The petition currently has 109,502 signatures and has been gathering steam even on social media, especially Twitter and Facebook.
