Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif broke up in 2016 (officially kicking off the year of the Bollywood break-ups). I, for one, was quite taken aback by the news of their split, especially because the two of them had posed for the media as a couple literally a month ago – at the legendary Kapoor Christmas lunch.
Unfortunately, the two of them parted ways during the filming of their upcoming release, Jagga Jasoos, with lots of reportage about the change in their equation affecting the making of the movie. Buzz was also that the lead pair of the movie wouldn’t be promoting the film together. The duo, though (along with director Anurag Basu) has been out and about promoting their film. Everybody and their grandmothers are analyzing their every move – how they’re sitting, if they’re awkward, who is looking at whom in what way – but Ranbir and Katrina seem unfazed.
I met them over the weekend for an interview. Here are the thoughts that went through my mind:
“Uh. This is going to be hard.”
Ranbir arrived a few minutes before Katrina did. Like a thorough professional, obviously the first thing I told Ranbir was ‘I love you’ and blushed. I’m not going to lie, I was dreading this interview a little bit because I’d only heard people say how they’re both being awkward and cold to each other and the media.
“Wait… is this what everyone is calling ‘awkward’?”
Katrina arrived, plonked herself on the couch and greeted me very nicely. Ranbir came and sat next to her and both of them had a quick discussion with their respective entourage about what the rest of their day looks like. I don’t know how to describe it exactly, but they were… well… at complete ease with each other.
“I mean, there is money riding on the film.”
Now you know that, as a generation, we are being brought up as a society of cynical beings. I found myself thinking that of course, they’ve to promote their film, there is so much money riding on it. It’s Ranbir’s first production, it’s taken three years to make. The last time a Ranbir film took this long, Bombay Velvet happened.
“This could just be for show.”
“Whatever,” I thought to myself, “this is all for the cameras!” Then the cameras switched off and they were still equally chill. Ranbir even cracked a joke that Katrina laughed at before he left.
“Umm.. they’re quite chill, tbh.”
During the course of my interview, we spoke about a bunch of things: Jagga Jasoos, how – in a film like this – everyone needs to follow the director’s vision, Katrina’s on point Instagram game, Ranbir’s on point Instagram stalking skills, how Ranbir feels he doesn’t have the skill set to be a producer, how Katrina feels she would like to experience being a producer some day… and many more things. They were both engaging and spoke their minds.
“Oh look, they crack jokes with each other!”
Ranbir actually brought up the ‘mansplaining Katrina‘ bit himself. He addressed the issue and apologized (half sarcastically, might I add) and Katrina pulled his leg about it. Everything was hunky dory!
“Break-ups are a b*tch, man.”
And that’s when I realized all over again: break-ups are hard, no matter who breaks up with whom. It’s a sucky time for everyone involved. And can you you imagine ending a relationship when all eyes are on you? The thought stresses me out. Being a celebrity is hard, man!
“I’d never be able to spend so much time with my ex after we split.”
Let’s face it, spending 90% of the day with your ex is nobody’s plan A! But both Ranbir and Katrina have shown up on sets day after day for a movie they believed in. Both of them have done interviews together knowing very well that every word they say, every move they make, every joke they crack is going to analyzed over and over because they used to date.
“What professionalism!”
And yet, they’re here. Talking about the film because so much is riding on it. Promoting a movie that they’ve spent so much time and effort on. Like I said, being a celebrity is hard, man!
“Jagga Jasoos looks like it’s worth the wait!”
All tabloid gossip and body language expertise aside, Jagga Jasoos’ trailer looks like it’s worth the wait. Like every movie, lots of effort and sweat and blood has gone behind it. It’s finally releasing on the 14th of July.
“Thanks for being cool, you guys. Good on you!”

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif spoke to Priyam Saha about #JaggaJasoos, mansplaining, Instagram stalking and much more!
