I’ll be honest, my expectations from Do Lafzon Ki Kahani was rather low. It’s directed by Deepak Tijori who has given us gems like Oops! and Tom, Dick and Harry and the movie has been long in the making, that’s why however hard it tries, it looks dated. The film has Randeep Hooda play Suraj, a brooding man and desperate lover getting tortured as an MMA fighter and Kajal Agarwal as Jenny play a manic pixie dream girl, but blind.
The interactions between the characters take you back to the ’90’s and the ’80’s and that’s the decade you really don’t want to go back to. Anyway, they meet and fall in love and build a house, get a dog and all that. Suraj, who had earlier hung his MMA gloves, gets back into the groove in order to get money for Jenny’s cornea operation that’ll bring her eyesight back. Honestly, I wouldn’t even be surprised if he’d put her in a church/temple/mosque and sing a rousing song which would compel God to bless the sobbing Jenny with eyesight.
Oh, also plot twist and spoiler alert, Suraj is indirectly involved in a car crash that lead to Jenny going blind and losing her parents. The second half of the movie is basically him being beaten black and blue, getting cut open (yep) and damaging his legs in order to atone his sins, and get some money. I’m sure Randeep had a better time as a prisoner in Sarbjit, than being a prisoner of love. There’s also Jenny boss, Mr. Chang, who tries to force himself on her, and another dude who hits on her later in the movie. There’s Mamik too (who played Aamir Khan‘s elder brother in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, which incidentally also starred Deepak Tijori) who plays Suraj’s coach and says things like ‘hit me harder’, which made me laugh more because I’m actually a 12-year old boy.
The movie is written by Girish Dhamija and as I’ve said before it’s full of cliches, the editing by Ballu Saluja is not up to the mark, the music by Amaal Malik is nice, especially the song Kuch Toh Hai, which is really, really good. Deepak’s direction is a major let-down. Also, Suraj as a character has a major flaw – despite nearly killing himself for Jenny, he doesn’t tell her that he’s somewhat responsible for the death of her parents and her blindness. Now for someone who loved her mom and dad so much, I think this is a very important piece of information that Jenny deserves to know, but I guess that’ll be answered in the sequel. What? You think there won’t be a sequel to this film? Deepak Tijori is making a sequel to Tom Dick and Harry, this man can do ANYTHING!
At the end of the movie, this quote comes up – Love never hurts, love heals. Sadly, it said nothing about healing the headache I got after watching this film.
