Alia Bhatt came under fire recently for stereotyping Biharis in her upcoming movie Udta Punjab. The author of this letter figured that the actress was showing Biharis in poor light by watching the trailer of the film and that her tattered clothes and abusive dialogues were an insult to the people from the state. Before we get to Alia’s reaction, I’d just like to mention that I’m also a Bihari and my parents have spent a major part of their youth in Bihar. A lot of my family still lives there, and while none of us wear bad clothes or abuse everyone every second (not in public at least), I think writing an open letter to an actress who is doing her job (that is, playing the role of a drug addict) is uncalled for. Bollywood rarely takes risks and if we start having a problem with whatever is portrayed on-screen, then soon our movies will be have unicorns as protagonists, because everyone loves unicorns right? Anyway, Alia had a very cool reaction to this fiasco.
Slay girl!
