I had honestly given up on the comedy scene on Indian Television after Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai, but 2015 surprised me rather pleasantly. From Sumit Sambhal Lega to Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai!, these shows have come as a breath of fresh air from the fiction and reality shows that float around.
Of course, these shows have great directors and are well-scripted, but I’ll like to give special credit to actors who add life to their character and make us love them.
So here’s a list of 5 funniest men on Indian television in no definitive order:
1. Namit Das
He is spot on as Sumit in Sumit Sambhal Lega. Honestly, I couldn’t have thought of a better actor to play this character. Stuck between his mother and wife, this helpless man uses his sense of humor to wade through grave situations in life.
2. Satish Kaushik
Bollywood’s eternal funny man and Sumit’s father in Sumit Sambhal Lega, Satish Kaushik loves eating and troubling everyone in the house. He calls himself ‘Jasbir-the-Walia-the-great’ a lot. Who talks like that and gets away with it without looking obnoxious? He vaguely reminds me of Indravadan Sarabhai, which makes me love him a lot more!
3. Vikram Kochhar
Sumit’s brother and Jasbir Walia’s elder son, Rajnish Walia is played beautifully by Vikram Kochhar. Hearing him talk is enough to make you laugh. Not even kidding- watch this!
Although Sumit Sambhal Lega is off air, but I am really hoping they come back with the second season really soon!
4. Rohitash Gaud
He is already pretty well established in the Indian comedy scene after having appeared in shows like Lapataganj. But Rohitash Gaud’s stint as Manmohan Tiwari in Bhahbi Ji Ghar Par Hai! is my favorite yet. His constant fights with his neighbour Vibhuti Narayan and antics to get Anita bhabi’s attention leaves us in splits!
5. Aasif Sheikh
Smart, educated and unemployed, Vibhuti Narayan Mishra is a house-husband and totally smitten by his neighbor’s wife, Angoori bhabhi. What makes him absolutely lovable is the way he speaks in English. Watching Aasif on TV after so many years made me realize how much I’ve missed watching him act.
A special shout out to Rakesh Bedi as Bhoori Lal, Angoori’s father and mad man, Saxena ji played by Saanand Verma who just add to the glory of this epic show!
