Back in 2009, the Kanye West and Taylor Swift saga began when he interrupted her VMA acceptance speech to say that Beyonce deserved the award. However, it seemed like things had sorted itself out over the years – until Kanye released a song this weekend, Famous, that includes the words: “For all my Southside n****s that know me best, I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex, Why? I made that bitch famous.”
So when Taylor picked up a Grammy today for Album of the Year, she took a thinly-veiled dig at Kanye. But more important than the dig is her overall message – that you should focus on your work.
As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I will say to all of the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success, or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday, when you get to where you’re going, you’ll look around you’ll know it was you and the people who love you that put you there, and that will be the greatest feeling in the world.
Applause!
