Our government has banned A LOT of things this year, good or bad we don’t know, but banning has kind of become a fashionable thing. Don’t like it? Ban it! So here’s a list of the stuff they banned this year which we found a little weird. But that’s strictly my opinion. Tell me what you think in the comments below!
1) Beef
The Maharashtra Government banned the sale and possession of beef in the state, under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (amendment) Act (MAPA), 1995. While there was already a ban on the slaughter of cows, the Maharashtra government has gone a step further by putting a blanket ban on the slaughter of bulls, bullocks and calves too! The bigger issue was that anyone found guilty would be liable for a 5-year imprisonment. People had a lot to say about this.
2) Porn
In order to combat child pornography, the Government came up with a grand plan to block access to 857 websites hosting pornographic content. It obviously didn’t last because India is primarily a free country. We came up with a list of movies to watch during the ban, though.
3) A list of cuss words
Remember this list?
Yea, the wonderful chief of the Indian Censor Board wanted to ban all these words! Thankfully, this ridiculous list was withdrawn after a majority of members voted against it.
4) India’s Daughter
A gut-wrenching documentary on the Nirbhaya rape case, directed by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin, was made as a part of BBC’s ongoing Storyville series and it was banned in India. NDTV expressed its silent protest by screening flickering lamp on a black screen during the scheduled time slot.
5) The release of Fifty Shades Of Grey
I mean, what if you start indulging in BDSM after watching Fifty Shades Of Grey, right? We’re obviously not mature enough to make a decision whether to watch this movie on our own will.
6) Sex toys
Snapdeal was taken to court because a lawyer found lubricants and massagers/vibrators being sold on the site. This definitely threatens the moral fabric of the country. Selling of sex toys is illegal in India. No rampant rabbit for you, ladies!
7) MAGGI!!
The love of my life was banned! But it’s back now and all seems well with the world again.
Have I missed out on any other thing that has been banned this year? Tell me in the comments below!
