Being desi is the best thing ever! Not only do we get the best food and song & dance sequences, our sartorial options are virtually unlimited too. Our wardrobes are full of vibrant colours and innumerable options. We scrounged Tisha Saksena’s store during her first anniversary celebrations to bring to you designs every desi girl needs in her wardrobe.
1. Drapes with churidars
Hand-embroidered raw silk on top, gorgeous flowing silk at the bottom as a drape – these kurtas do a fabulous job at complementing curvy Indian figures. No wonder we’ve seen Bollywood beauties like Priyanka Chopra and Karishma Kapoor rock it. The jewel tones add to the opulence, making it perfect for a wedding trousseau.
2. Cutwork Jackets
The easiest way to jazz up a solid anarkali or a lehenga, cutwork jackets with embroidery are quite the wardrobe chameleons. What’s more, they can even be paired with a plain white cotton dress or a pair of ripped denims and white t-shirt to bring that desi flavor and really stand out.
3. Blouses that double up as Crop Tops
A neutral colour, a heritage texile, a little zardozi, and traditional Indian embroidery – long blouses that open at the back or side are an ever appreciating asset. Wear them with full circle skirts when you’re not wearing them with saris. Also on trend is wearing multiple blouses. Top off a plain silk one with an embellished sleeveless one. Best part? They can be used separately too.
4. Bright ensembles with zardozi and gota work
How do you make an ensemble look dressed up but not heavy? Adorn it with gota! We’re completely in love with these light but fabulous lehengas. Perfect for your best friend’s sangeet, cousin’s wedding – well, for everything really! Also, it can easily be turned into skirt by teaming it up with a white shirt.
5. Shararas
It’s a skirt? It’s a kurta? Wait, it’s a sharara! Simple permutation & combination makes this an outfit that keeps on giving. Wear them together, wear them separately with complementing coordinates – your wardrobe is totally desi ready!
And finally, though this is not a wardrobe addition, every desi girl must have some Raja Ravi Verma inspired wall art – all the frames are actually canvas-prints of Tisha’s campaign shoots.
Delicate embroidered frame, candles, fresh flowers – mogra anyone? And a few brass fittings for a refreshing room. We wish we had the luxury to have a splendid little garden right outside our office windows too.
