We’ve all heard one, or more than one, person say that “natural” is the only way to go when it comes to skincare. That person might’ve had a bad experience or sometimes, we just don’t get enough information. While it’s always best to ask a dermatologist, there are a few pointers we should keep in mind when it comes to buying skincare products. So, let’s bust some natural beauty myths and see the light!
1) Not Everything That Says ‘Natural’ Is Natural
There is no proper definition of natural, in India or in most other countries. This means, “natural” products could been anything from just being derived by natural ingredients to minimal biological change to the ingredient. If a natural ingredient is being highly processed or changed, it’s pretty much the same thing as chemical.
2) Chemical Isn’t Always Bad
They are there for a reason: balance, preservation, and effectiveness. Believe it or not, even natural ingredients can oxidize or “go bad” if they aren’t preserved. Sometimes, a natural oil alone cannot seep through the top layer of your skin. This brings me to my next point.
3) Natural Isn’t Always Good
Again, it isn’t bad either, but balance and formula is key. Coconut oil could be too heavy for acne-prone skin. Lavender oil can soothe burns, but has been known to cause allergy. Mixing tea tree oil with lavender oil can be harmful. In fact, tea tree oil dries up acne, but can be too intense for long-term use. The list goes on. Point being, not all essential oils can be blindly applied to the skin and virgin oil can spoil over time.
P.S – This is not to say essential oils don’t work miracles. It’s always good to test out oils on a small patch of skin, over time and then you can decide if you really want to go for it.
4) Wake Up And Smell The Roses
Sometimes, too much of an essential oil with a strong smell or products that are “natural” and give off a strong fragrance of the natural ingredient, aren’t good for your skin. Strong fragrance can be major irritants and inflame your skin.
5) Mineral Oil Isn’t Terrible For Your Skin
Just because it’s derived from crude oil, doesn’t make it bad. A lot of ingredients are derived from various different sources. Mineral oil can be good for dry skin.
The next time you’re out buying products, or someone tells you “natural” is the only way, you’ll know what to say.
