So Bollywood lifting stories from Hollywood (and sometimes books, without giving them credit) is such old news even dinosaurs are like ‘move on bro‘. There are obviously the usual suspects like Murder being ‘inspired‘ by Unfaithful and God Tussi Great Ho which was a pathetic attempt to remake Bruce Almighty. But… there are certain Bollywood movies that are considered classics in their own right; sadly they too have had a Hollywood counterpart made earlier! Want to find which movies we’re talking about? Read on!
1) Bees Saal Baad – The Hound Of The Baskervilles
Yep, one of the most popular stories from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes series inspired the Bengali thriller Jighansa which was remade in Hindi as Bees Saal Baad!
2) Kohraa – Rebecca
One of the scariest movies I’ve watched as a kid was a blatant copy of a classic book and an Academy Award award winning movie named Rebecca. This is why I have trust issues.
3) Dhund – The Unexpected Guest
This Agatha Christie play was my favourite play in school. I’m sure the Chopras felt the same way when they made Dhund!
4) Satte Pe Satta – Seven Brides For Seven Brothers
Did NOT see this coming!
5) Aradhana – To Each His Own
Et tu Rajesh Khanna?
6) Sangharsh – The Silence Of The Lambs
Akshay Kumar was not a brilliant but sadly cannibalistic Hannibal Lector and Ashutosh Rana was no ‘Buffalo Bill’, but the basic story line and the interaction between the officer and the genius criminal were far too similar to ignore!
7) Khoon Bhari Maang – Return To Eden
My favourite revenge movie was directly lifted from an Australian television series called Return To Eden. Cannot express how disappointed I am!
8) Chori Chori – It Happened One Night
Not only Chori Chori though, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin was also inspired by this Frank Capra classic. If you look closely, you will notice the theme present in other well loved movies like Jab We Met and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge as well!
9) Baazigar – A Kiss Before Dying
I am very disappoint.
10) Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar – Breaking Away
THIS BROKE MY HEART!
Tell me more such copies you were extremely disappointed to find out about. Special thanks to IMDb for putting light on the REAL idea behind a lot of movies!
