Team MissMalini feels so blessed to have a job that takes us everywhere from movie premiers to fashion week and beyond. Our latest adventure together was a life-changing makeup masterclass with, get this… the BOBBI BROWN team! I say this with so much excitement because I know how much every Mumbai girl has been hoping and praying for a Bobbi Brown store in Mumbai. Well, the makeup gods have answered all of our wishes and the iconic beauty brand is opening a store on the next week at Palladium.
And that’s exactly why we received an exclusive, sneak preview of what we’re supposed to expect with Bobbi Brown makeup guru, Eliano Bou Assi. He taught us everything we need to know about prepping skin, eyes, lips, bronzing, and brows! Here are some of the most eventful moments of our Bobbi Brown masterclass.
1) Hors D’Oeuvres
Not the usual kind, guys. We were served some super healthy, but super yummy snacks ranging from strawberries and chocolate to cranberry juice and salsa! And it wasn’t your regular cranberry juice, it came with a straw that reminded me of candy land!
2) We Were In Table Decor Heaven!
We didn’t know the Bobbi Brown team was made up of your regular Martha Stewarts! No, seriously. Everything from the brushes to our fuchsia notebooks were organized amongst a bed of drinks and snacks for the utmost convenience.
3) Skincare Comes First!
Remember my report on moisturizer being a huge trend? Well, turns out Bobbi’s been in on the secret from the very start. Eliano stressed on maintaining good skin and prepping it before makeup as a canvas. All of us have different skin types and it’s very important to cleanse, prep, prime, and use makeup according to your skin type.
4) Eye Cream
No cream, but eye cream should be used to prep your under eye, followed by a little primer.
5) Exfoliation
Exfoliate twice a week with a gentle exfoliator and you’re golden! Just remember to avoid active pimples.
6) Concealer Is The Secret Of The Universe
Your concealer should always be one or two shades lighter than your skin color. It should neutralize dark spots and brighten your under eye, which is why it must be used on top of a color corrector. Once the color corrector has neutralized your under eye (it may even look a little orange), the concealer will brighten.
7) About That Foundation
Never test foundation on your hands. Always test it on your cheek or jaw. You’ll know your foundation isn’t right if it’s yellow, it’s too dark and if it’s grey, it’s too light.
8) CC Creams
A.K.A color corrector creams. Apply a coin sized amount all over your face to even out discoloration. This cream isn’t “BB Cream but better” contrary to popular belief. It can be worn under foundation or alone. But it does give major flashback due to the SPF in its formula, so be careful if you’re going to be under flash photography.
9) Concealer Application
Use a concealer brush and tap, don’t swipe. Use gentle motions by starting in the inner corner and work in opposite directions, so you fill in lines. Make sure you apply concealer all the way up to the lash line.
10) Foundation Application
Start on your nose, because this area has the most redness and work it in gently, in a downward motion to hide hairs. Tap lightly on extremely red areas.
11) What To Do When You’re In A Hurry
You can add more steps or cut them down according to you want to. Foundation can also only be applied in problem areas for less coverage.
12) Powder
Sweep a little powder only onto areas that get oily. Tap some under your eye to seal in your concealer. Too much powder will give you a cake-y effect.
13) Bronzers
The color of your bronzer should be the same shade as the color of your natural tan. Apply matte bronzer with a fluffy brush in the shape of a 3. Start from the top of your forehead to the hollow under your cheek bones, and end along your jawline for a natural contour.
14) Blush
Blush can make you look completely flushed and bright! Smile and apply it onto the apple of your cheeks. If you’ve applied too much, you can use a clean foundation brush to blend.
15) Lipstick
Choose your lipstick color according to your blush. Make sure they don’t clash too much, but don’t forget to have fun with different shades. You don’t want a color that’s lighter than your lip color because that won’t be nude, it’ll just be pale! And we don’t want to be pale, do we?
16) Eyebrows!
These are my favorite. As Bobbi Brown says, “Eyebrows can frame your face.” Check out this handy brow guide for perfect brows. You may want to add a little concealer under your brow bone for a perfect after effect once you’ve filled in your brows.
17) The Easiest Smokey Eye Ever
Whether it’s cream shadow or powder eyeshadow, the simples smokey eye is this: apply a dark line on your crease and blend up, towards your crease, no higher. You can smoke it out a little more on the corners, if you’d like. BAM! Really, that’s it.
18) The Kajal Mistake Everyone Is Making
Never apply eyeliner only on your lower lash line. It’s either only on top or both. Only kajal can make your eyes look droopy. Put at least a thin line on your lids as well.
19) Color Play
Don’t put more than one bold color on your eye. Unless it’s an editorial, you don’t want clashing colors all over your eye.
