While the talks of 100-200-300 crore are commonplace today, there is one record that won’t be broken for some time. In fact, the probability is very high that it will stay on till at least the end of 2015. We are talking about the record that first time director Sajid Nadiadwala created when he scored a double century with his very first effort, Kick.
As things stand now, he will be unchallenged for many more months to come.
Informs a trade pundit:
“That’s correct. Sajid’s Kick has done the business of 232 crore just in India. Not just it is the highest ever for Salman Khan, it is also the biggest ever for a debutant director. He has left his contemporaries far behind when it comes to their first film making such a huge mark. Now in months to come, though there will be debutant directors arriving every week or a fortnight, it is just impossible that they will be able to hit a double century in their first attempt. The reason is simple – you need a superstar to lead the show and currently, all superstars are working with experienced directors.”
One look at the list below and the the logic indeed holds, as all the upcoming films of male superstars are directed by people who already have a few films to their credit – not even a single debutant features in this list:
Shah Rukh Khan – Fan (Maneesh Sharma)
Salman Khan – Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Kabir Khan), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (Sooraj Barjatya)
Aamir Khan – P.K. (Rajkumar Hirani)
Akshay Kumar – Baby (Neeraj Pandey), Gabbar (Krish), Brothers (Karan Malhotra)
Hrithik Rohan – Mohenjo Daro (Ashutosh Gowariker)
Ajay Devgn – Action Jackson (Prabhu Dheva)
Ranbir Kapoor – Bombay Velvet (Anurag Kashyap), Jagga Jasoos (Anurag Basu), Tamasha (Imtiaz Ali)
Ranveer Singh – Dil Dhadakne Do (Zoya Akhtar), Bajirao Mastani (Sanjay Leela Bhansali)
While a few of these films indeed carry a potential of not just 200 crore but even 300 crore, the fact remains that they all have an experienced director at the helm. This pretty much means that for a debutant director to deliver a 200 crore success, a pairing with aforementioned superstars is still some time away.
Till then, Sajid Nadiadwala has all the good reasons to make merry and comfortably wear the crown of ‘the only debutant director with a 200 crore start’!
