Runway shows and ostentatious fashion parties, that’s where you’d think you would spot a high flying designer garment. Well on BandraRoad, we look at style on an organically street level. We strip the garment of all its fuss and play with its core strength. After all, clothes are what you make of them. On MissMalini’s World, we took 1 garment each, from 3 of the most talked about young fashion designers and built a cool street look with them.
Kallol Datta 1955, Payal Khandwala and Rishta by Arjun Bhasin are 3 labels with aesthetics that boast of a strong sense of individuality and an unapologetically robust spirit. So we brought in their works to build something rad. We chose Gigi from Team MissMalini for her strong personality. She is a designer, a blogger, a rock climber and by far, one of coolest chicks you’ll meet. Of course, I too worked my stuff in this shoot and here’s how it all looked.
Street Inspired Style With Kallol Datta 1955
Kallol Datta is a warped man who featured in our list of Street Rad designers. His own style beams out as something unusual and his work is a reflection of his own mysterious universe. When I asked him to lend us a garment, he didn’t care – “Pick anything!” he said.
The label makes womenswear but it isn’t restricted to women alone. I tried on a 3D drape hooded tunic and instantly, I was sure that men could rock a Kallol Datta 1955 look too! I teamed it with a pair of voluminous hippie pants I found at Sarojini Nagar Market in Delhi and threw on a starry block printed shirt. Obviously my trusted combat boots found their way into this look to give it that raw edge.
Street Inspired Style with Payal Khandwala
Fresh, feminine and yet strong, that’s Payal Khandwala‘s design essence from where I see it. I picked a full length shirt dress in an electric blue by the label and had Gigi try it on.
Judging by the look of the garment, we turned things around. I used the garment as jacket and Gigi wore it with a tribal monokini that she bought from a flea market in Goa. A pair of classic black skinny jeans and a sky high pair of wedges gave the look its sex appeal.
Street Inspired Style with Rishta by Arjun Saluja
Fine tailoring and clean lines in the Indian fashion scene are hard to come by. But at the house of Rishta by Arjun Saluja, there isn’t any other way. Arjun’s eye for sharp tailored lines spills deep into his designs. Which is why we had to have something special from him, something we had to be (in his words) ‘careful’ with.
We borrowed a distressed leather jacket with triple zipper panels in the front. The jacket was as bad-ass as bad-ass could get. It came with thumb holes! I styled Gigi in a cool goth avatar complete with a long black dress off a street market in Mumbai and chains too. A pair of boots would have been too predictable for this look, so we brought in a rad pair of high top kicks. Boom!
So there you have it, high fashion isn’t about fancy events and stilettos. It’s so much more and completely depends on how and where you choose to go with it. We believe in designers like Kallol, Arjun and Payal who have grabbed high fashion by the *beep* and given street inspired style an extension.
