After a good weekend at the box office that saw the collections gain momentum with every passing day, Mary Kom enjoyed stable weekdays at the box office. As mentioned last week, the word of mouth ranged from average to good and hence the collections didn’t really hit the roof. Still, they were consistent enough to ensure that the film earned around 42 crore in week one. Considering the fact that releases of last two weeks, Raja Natwarlal and Mardaani, couldn’t come anywhere close to these collections even in their lifetime (leave aside the opening week) this is a feat good enough for Mary Kom.
Having said that, considering the pre-release hype as well as industry and trade endorsements, one expected the trending to be a tad better. It isn’t bad by any means but then it isn’t exceptional either, which would have made it a candidate for turning out to be the highest grossing heroine-driven film.
Beginning this week there is a plethora of releases till the arrival of Bang Bang and Haider on 2nd October, what with 10-12 films in the pipeline. Though most of these aren’t really notable, they would still eat up the screen space, hence proving to be some sort of competition for Mary Kom.
As things stand today, the respective records of Queen (Kangana Ranaut) and Kahaani (Vidya Balan), both of which just about crossed the 60 crore mark, seem safe. Still, Priyanka Chopra can take pride in the fact that she would have at least a 50 crore success running solely on her shoulders.
