Sky high heels – almost every girl’s favourite! I mean, why not? It makes you look taller after all. Might I add, they also make you feel sexy and increase your confidence! And… you can always feign a trip and fall into the arms of your partner. Don’t we girls know it all? *cheeky smile*
But we’ve got to admit, high heels can be uncomfortable at times and can also lead to injuries. Speaking of injuries, high heels can cause damage to your toenails leading to corns, in-grown toenails and calluses; and can cause problems to the skin and ball of your foot. Some other acute injuries are ankle sprains and stress fractures because of the abnormal pressure being put on your foot! Okay okay, we don’t mean to scare you! Lets look at the brighter side here, shall we? You can always go in for a good foot massage at the spa; but injuries are painful, expensive spas notwithstanding. So, here’s how you can avoid these altogether!
#1 LOWER HEEL HEIGHT
Try to choose a shoe that has a lower heel height. I know this is hard given our obsession with high heels, but try okay?
#2 SQUARE SHAPED TOE BOX
Opt for heels with a more square shaped toe box, so your toes aren’t constricted.
#3 COUNT YOUR MINUTES!
If you still can’t get yourself to wear a lower heel, try to limit the amount of time you spend wearing the high heel.
#4 CUT THEM TOENAILS
Protect your toes by cutting them frequently, so that they don’t rub off against the tip of the shoes. Trust me, nail damage from high heels can be quite painful! Been there, done that! Use silicon toe pads to keep your toes protected and give it some extra cushioning.
#5 USE INSOLES
When you do wear high heels, keep the body weight shifted through the entire shoe. Also ladies, insoles are your best friends. They were made for a reason; use them! They can be of any kind – silicon gel ones or high heels orthotics. There’s also extra cushioning that you can put at the back of the heel.
#6 SWITCH TO PLATFORM HEELS
Your best bet would be to wear platform heels. There is the height from the front heel too, which reduces the incline in the shoe, thus reducing pain.
After you’re done wearing your high heels, make sure to do some foot stretches or soak them in warm salt water. This will help recover your foot, so that the next time you put on your heels, it will keep your feet strong and you can continue to wear your favourite heels, however high they may be!
