The Singham Returns trailer went live at 1pm and of course, we had to check it out. As the description in the YouTube video puts it, “For those few and far who don’t know this is a sequel to the 2011 blockbuster SINGHAM!!” What I’ve always loved about Rohit Shetty, as comes across in his interviews too, is that he doesn’t take himself or his movies too seriously. He unabashedly admits to following a formula and that honesty is endearing. Now, Singham Returns is obviously an action film, but these moments from the trailer made me laugh:
1. The compelling text that spells out “He had to return”! Given the popularity of Singham, especially the repeat viewing on television, it would be stupid to not cash in and return with a sequel. But you know, the audience also loves Ajay Devgn‘s action avatar. So well, he has returned and you can watch him on Independence Day!
2. I love the way the titles of Rohit Shetty’s earlier films appear as bullets on the screen, synchronised with Bajirao Singham shooting from a gun. My interpretation of that is a cheeky remark on how Rohit Shetty shoots films at us and we die laughing!
3. And this reference to Bollywood culture in the dialogue, “teri kundli mere haath mein tab se hai, jab se tu Gaiety Galaxy theatre ke bahar ticket black karta tha” (your horoscope is in my hands from the time you’ve been selling tickets in black outside Gaiety Galaxy theatre). It is a ridiculous line, given the situation and set-up it is delivered in and just why people love Rohit Shetty! And Kareena Kapoor Khan rides a rickshaw!
It’s just the kind of movie I want to watch in a single screen theatre, while eating samosa. What about you?
