Let’s debunk a major myth from the get go… a gluten-free diet is probably not a healthier choice for you unless you are actually diagnosed as intolerant by your healthcare professional and you definitely will not lose weight simply by going gluten-free. Trust me, gluten-free products can be packed with sugar, vegetable oil, and all sorts of other diet enemies just like their gluten-full versions. It’s always best to read the ingredient list on any packaged item or better yet eat foods in the closest version to their original form. Hello, fruits and vegetables!
In the case that you are giving a gluten-free lifestyle a try, there are substitutes for just about any food you are worried about cutting out. Here are some of my favorite Indian made gluten-free products:
SoulFull Cereal. Protip: Mixing the banana and original flavor of this ragi based cereal balances out the sweetness.
Macarons from Le 15 Patisserie. One of my birthday cakes this year was a giant lavender macaron from Le 15. Need I say more? Delicious.
Conscious Food Power Snacks Grain Crackers Pearl Millet Khakras Grain Crackers. I keep these crackers stocked up in my desk drawer as well as at home. They are tasty enough to eat alone, but my favorite ways are dipped in hummus or topped with melted cheese.
Zero-G Porridge Mix. I use this product so often, that I brought it home with me to the US on my last trip. Perfect for a quick, easy meal.
Crepes from Suzette. The only item on my list that has to be eaten immediately, but is definitely worth a mention, are the crepes from Suzette. Their buckwheat crepes are fully gluten-free and come in endless combinations of savoury or sweet.
SOS Organics Himalayan Puffed Amaranth. Amaranth provides a high quality protein, with a nearly perfect balance of essential amino acids. I try sprinkle this on everything from salads to eggs.
Cupcakes and Bread from Ellipsis. Saving the best for last, the bakery items at Ellipsis. I am fully addicted. My freezer is stocked with the gluten-free bread and I can’t resist posting an Instagram every time I order some of the cupcakes that are almost too pretty to eat. Just make sure you order in advance as these are specialty items.
Happy eating! x
