Growing up in the nineties, I had the privy of seeing the likes of Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer and much later, Kate Moss on the pages of Vogue and on TV. Enter the new era, where we see some models shaking up the fashion world with their killer walks, natural features and looks that launch a thousand products. Here’s presenting the current crop of models that’s going to stare back at you from a billboard or magazine spread pretty soon.
Cara Delevingne
Cara Delevingne is the fashion industry’s current IT girl. With her trademark bushy eyebrows, she has got women everywhere putting down the tweezers in favour of a a more natural look. At just 20, she’s snagged campaigns with Mulberry, Yves Saint Laurent beauty and DKNY. Born to an illustrious family, her sister Poppy Delevingne is also a successful model in her own right.
Archana Akhil Kumar
With her luminous skin and doe like eyes, Archana Akhil Kumar has created a buzz ever since she started walking for LFW. She has bagged covers with Marie Claire, Grazia and Elle, not to mention walked for big league Indian designers. She got her first break after participating in the Elite Look of the Year 2011, making it to the top 15. The Bangalore born beauty studied commerce but found her calling in modelling.
Jourdan Dunn
Jourdan Dunn has much reason to celebrate; she has just been announced as the face of cosmetics giant of Maybelline. The British model shot to fame at the age of 16 after being discovered shopping at the local store Primark. She was the first black model to walk a Prada runway after ten years and subsequently walked for 75 shows that season. She got pregnant at 19 and walked with her growing belly on the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier. Aside from modelling, she hosts a cooking show on Jay Z’s Home + Life YouTube channel, that aside from having quite a few celebrity guests also has some healthy recipes featured on it. Besides snagging prestigious magazine covers such as Vogue Italia and Paris, she’s also been the face of H&M and Topshop.
Ketho Leno Kense
Ketho Lenso Kense first caught everyone’s eye after appearing on the Kingfisher Calendar Hunt 2014 and luckily, she’s made that transition from being just another swimsuit model to high-fashion regular. She’s snagged the April cover of Elle and has walked the ramp for Wills India Lifestyle Fashion Week. Not bad for someone who just entered the industry, right?
Karlie Kloss:
She counts Taylor Swift as her BFF and has fronted campaigns for Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Donna Karan, Nina Ricci, Yves Saint Laurent and many many more, not to mention a starring role as a Victoria’s Secret PINK model. To top it off, she isn’t even 25! Yes, Karlie Kloss seems to have it all. Known for her death stare and runway walk – she’s a hot favourite with magazine editors and designers alike.
