The 90s were popular for a lot of things, however fashion wasn’t one of them. This era saw a massive plunge in dressing sensibilities. Bollywood had access to the worst of it – the stars and starlets, both suffered at par. Blame it on the lack of stylists or on the dress dadas take on international style or simply on bad taste – the films in the 90s spewed out one monstrosity after another. Some bizarre styles trended massively in this decade. But we had a lot of fun documenting this and so, we present 9 items of clothing that the boys in Bollywood couldn’t get enough of in the 90s.
1. Leather – Hide the Animal Hides Please!
Tropical Indian temperatures did not deter our stars from donning animal skin, both real and fake. Pants, jumpsuits, jackets, tank tops – nothing scared these boys.
2. Vests
Vests, wife beaters, tank tops (basically the entire Lux Cozy product range) were a crucial part of the 90s Bollywood wardrobe.
3. Turtlenecks – Because After the Storm, Comes the Coverup
When the men got tired of flashing their hairy chests, they’d opt for higher necklines. As you can see, they were really not afraid of the heat!!
4. Dungarees – Channeling your Inner Child
Unless you’re a coal miner or a construction worker pre WW2, there is no way a grown man should wear dungarees! It does absolutely nothing for the male body type.
5. Hats, Hats and more Hats
Bollywood in the 90s went all out with accessories – hats being the forerunner in the game. While police caps were the most popular, we did occasionally witness the odd cowboy hat.
6. Ugly Rayon Shirts
I love prints! I’ve loved them ever since I was a tot. Even in the 90s – during my growing years. Yes, I have grown up to the ugly prints Bollywood wore and yes, I loved them all – no matter how ugly!!
7. Muscle Tees
Tight muscle t-shirts were big in the 90s. I remember everyone walking around in Shah Rukh Khan‘s Polo tee from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
8. Tight High Waisted Jeans
Salman Khan wins this look hands down! One word – Judwaa.
9. Short Shorts – Oh the horror!!!
Ummm. NO!!
