Britain has been the hotbed for fashion since the ‘60s. From Mary Quant to Stella McCartney, everyone has wanted a piece of the hip, urban style that permeates everywhere. As a shopping destination, it boasts of the famed Portobello Road Market – a haunt for vintage and antique hunters. There’s also Saville Row with its stores for bespoke suits and tailors who have trained some of the best of the best designers. But what Britain boat’s about is its high-street fashion. It has some of the best in the world. Some brands have made their way here and some we just can’t wait for to arrive on Indian shores.
Topshop:
Every fashion maven worth her Choos has an item from Topshop. Founded by Phillip Green, the retail chain has stores in over 37 countries. (We’re eagerly awaiting one in India) Its best known for its runway to rack concept – where one can snap up designer-inspired designs for a fraction of the price. Aside from that, they have extremely cool collaborations – the most notable one being with icon Kate Moss, who recently returned to launch a capsule collection in the coming months.
Marks & Spencer:
For wardrobe basics and everything else, there’s Marks & Spencer. The retail chain is known for classic styles that can appeal to everyone from 16 to 60. Think sleek trousers, chic sheath dresses and colourful tees. They also have a beauty line and home décor collection. The very sensual Rosie Huntington Whitely has also designed a line of lingerie for their Autograph line. Now who wouldn’t want to have some sexy knickers designed by her?
Accessorize:
Who doesn’t love accessorises? They make and break outfits. Accessorize diversified from the house of Monsoon to launch a whole scale line dedicated to jewellery and handbags. Celebrating their 30th year – we particularly love their delicate jewellery pieces and clutches. Swimwear and shoes are also available at their stores.
New Look:
This is the brand that you can shop from, for any occasion – be it a music festival, beach or drinks at night with the office crowd. Did you know that New Look was started by Indian origin entrepreneur Tom Singh? The brand has dedicated lines to petite and tall people, as well as maternity wear aside from regular duds. Love it!
River Island:
Would you believe that the founds of one of the most urban, hip clothing brands started off selling vegetables and knit wool? The Lewis Brothers launched River Island after merging their Chelsea Girl store. The River Island girl is definitely downtown and likes to turn heads. They recently had pop diva Rihanna design two capsule collections that flew off the shelves.
ASOS:
Ok, they may not have a physical store but UK based retail giant ASOS has changed the way we shop online. Shipping to almost every location worldwide and offering a vast array of brands as well as their in-house line. Also, if you’ve always wondered what ASOS stands for – it’s As Seen On Screen. It’s hard to pick a favourite from them since everything is varied and caters to everyone!
