14th March saw Mumbai’s EDM fans lose the plot as the man with the big Mau5head – Joel Zimmerman aka deadmau5 – landed at the Sunburn arena in a warm orange glow.
Being a hardcore mau5head, I jumped at the offer to cover the event. For those of you who don’t know deadmau5 – shame on you! For those who do, we present out favourite moments from the concert yesterday
When R3hab synchronized the crowd to bounce together
There are artists and there are performers and then there are those artists who have such a great time doing what they do that the audience just can’t help but join in. R3hab (pronounced rehab), the opening act, looked like he was having an absolute blast making the crowds lift off the ground. He set the crowd going with heavy bass drops causing the entire audience to bounce simultaneously.
when the mau5heads got creative
Before arriving, deadmau5 tweeted “Here’s a fun fact for ya India, Chicago holds the record for most mau5heads I’ve ever seen at a show, think you can do better? I have faith!” We didn’t find as many heads as we hoped but there were a few who did get quite creative. Follow #SpottheMau5 to see what the fans came up with. Some that we spotted were Patriotic Mau5, SpaceInvaders Mau5, Disco Mau5, Original Mau5 and even this guy!!
When the guards just wouldn’t give a ****
Ah the bouncers, you can’t help but love ’em! The guys guarding the main stage remained unfazed as the pre pubescent boys in the front of the barricades convulsed violently to their favorite anthems. I might be wrong but I think I saw one break into a smile for a nano second. Although the uniformed guards perched on the high plinths had the best seat in the house, it was obvious they would rather be watching Salman Khan strut his stuff instead of the biggest electronic artist ever.
When Deadmau5 opened his act in a turban and kurta
Indian’s tend to be quite patriotic and we love it when our famous guests partake in our cultural quirks (remember Michelle Obama‘s lavni session?). However, nobody expected the world’s most groundbreaking electronic producer to walk up in a teal kurta and a wedding turban. The fans couldn’t get over it!
WHEN DEADMAU5 downed a glass of lassi on stage and hated it
For his Indian tour, not only did he adopt the look, he adopted the sounds as well. He recently made a mix with Daler Mehendi‘s ‘Tunak Tunak Tun‘ (personally, I think its not his best). Taking the cultural experience to the next level, deadmau5 whipped out a big glass of lassi in the middle of his act and proceeded to down it. After that he reacted “This tastes like S***” Joel darling, it’s an acquired taste. Don’t worry we still love you.
Thats our round up, here are more pictures from the event. deadmau5 plays at Bangalore today and Delhi Tomorrow. Make sure you’re there, this is one gig you should not miss!
