The aliens have landed – that would be the instinctive thought when stepping into the main show arena for Gaurav Gupta’s collection in collaboration with Mawi. The show, as with all of Gupta’s runway presentations was nothing short of a cinematic experience.
Two giant origami birds adorned the entrance while a giant space ship like object was suspended mid-ramp, and the smoke machine was used in full swing.
Kicking off with some dark, dramatic music, models draped in molten gold jersey gowns and saris festooned with some of Mawi’s baubles walked the ramp.
From brooches to statement necklaces and oversized earrings, all picked from her extensive archival collection, blended seamlessly with Gupta’s space age meets Egypt collection.
Fitting evening gowns and pre-draped saris were crafted with his signature drapes in hues such as teal, bright orange and copper. For Mawi Keivom, it was a sort of home coming – born in Manipur, she has successfully established her luxe-jewellery line that has fans in Solange Knowles, Cheryl Cole and Rihanna.
With fans Lisa Haydon and Kalki Koechlin sitting front row (and also outfitted in his collection) – I wouldn’t be surprised if the outfits will make their way into their wardrobes pretty soon.
