Let us face facts; celebrities are our biggest inspirations when it comes to fashion. The minute they step out wearing a designer’s outfit, it is instantly copied or sold out. Don’t believe what I’m saying? The royal blue Issa dress Kate Middleton wore to the press announcement of her engagement with Prince William was instantly sold out. The brand’s official site was down for days thanks to the web traffic. It almost led to the brand’s bankruptcy as they could not cope up with the high demand of orders. (The brand has since recovered, having bought over by Camilla Al-Fayed.) Oscar dresses are instantly copied and knock-offs are produced in a matter of a few hours. Coming back to celebrities, we might hate them or adore them but there’s no denying that they influence the way we dress. I have drawn up a list of people you revere and the style tips you can learn from them.
Sonam Kapoor:
Sonam Kapoor is one Bollywood star that keeps things interesting on the red carpet. She can pull off probably any style – whether it is desi, glamazon, retro or girl next door. What we like is that she does not restrict herself to just high-end labels like her peers but instead wears upcoming designers and supports their work. Here are 4 style cues to learn from her.
Style Tip: Be Fearless
Sonam Kapoor gives two hoots about what people think of her outfits. Whether it is exaggerated hips or couture gowns, Kapoor is not afraid to rock them. Sometimes, step away from your comfort zone and try something different. If you have long hair, chop it into a shaggy bob or embrace a silhouette you would not normally wear such as coloured frames or trapeze dresses.
Psst! I always thought maxi dresses were not for petite girls but I tried it on and I’m in love!
Olivia Palermo:
If you read my earlier blog on the new fashion stars you must follow, you would have read that Olivia Palermo is my style icon. She never has a bad day fashion wise, whether it is running errands or walking her dog.
Style Tip: Let Accessories Take the Lead
Palermo is all about colour and accessorising. Whether punching up an outfit with a bright clutch or clashing prints – she knows how to get it just right. If you’re afraid of colour, pick something in jewel tones rather than brights, they’re a lot more elegant. I love how she chose a pink clutch and animal-print shoes. You can also try the same look, but make sure the print is small.
Kim Kardashian:
The world is divided into Kim Kardashian haters and lovers. Some might dismiss her as just another trashy TV star but her new found fashion prowess thanks to beau Kanye West and friendship with Givenchy’s Ricardo Tisci is something you cannot dispute.
Style Tip: Never underestimate the power of a good coat/jacket.
For folks living in a cooler climate, a coat is an essential not just to keep warm but to give a classier, pulled together look to your outfit. Wearing just jeans and a t-shirt? A good, well- tailored coat layered with a bright scarf is something you can’t go wrong with – even if you’re wearing Converse sneakers. Opt for a neutral camel coat popularised by Max Mara instead of a black or navy one.
A blazer is another must-have. It can be dressed up or down, paired with a silky blouse and leather leggings or for a casual route, wear it with a t-shirt and jeans.
Deepika Padukone:
Deepika Padukone’s fashion sense has evolved since she first made her debut in Om Shanti Om. With personal stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania’s help, she has transformed from budding model to certified fashionista. Here are 5 ways you can emulate her style.
Style Tip: Have a signature style
Deepika loves wearing sheath dresses, maxi dresses, thong sandals and ripped jeans (of course, not all at once). If you know what works for you, stick to it. However, try switching it up at times and that’s where you can with a current trend. Remember in the wise words of Coco Chanel: Fashion fades, style is eternal.
Kareena Kapoor Khan:
Kareena Kapoor Khan has certainly switched things up in the style department. But what we love apart from her sassy disposition and acting chops, is the way she totally dresses for her body shape.
Style Tip: Dress for Your Body Type
Kareena has had fluctuating body sizes but despite that, she knows just exactly how to dress for her body. A-line dresses that flatter her pear-shape body or column gowns paired with sky-scraper heels to look taller and more statue-esque. Take a long hard look at your body and identify your silhouette, then choose outfits according to that.
