The director of a film is believed to be the captain of the ship. If that is true, managing a crew, the numbers of which could run into hundreds or thousands may not necessarily be an easy task. And it is possible that directors will lose their cool. On The Front Row Dialogues edition with leading directors, host Anupama Chopra asks them if they scream on set and their responses are quite hilarious.
Anupama Chopra: Farah, do you scream, on set?
Farah Khan: Oh, yes. I don’t sound like a man just naturally, it’s years of screaming. Like Shah Rukh (Khan) thinks I am using a mike, and sometimes I am not even using the mike. He’s like “Put the mike off”, but I am not using the mike.
Anupama Chopra: Anurag, what about you?
Anurag Kashyap: I don’t scream on the set. It’s always with the producers and line producers, people like that, it’s only on the phone.
Anupama Chopra: Imtiaz, you?
Imtiaz Ali: I am a wannabe screamer. I try to scream. Nothing comes out and somehow, I have been cursed that people around me don’t really respect me too much. So I don’t think they’ll take it.
Anurag Kashyap: Because they love him too much, they lust after him.
Imtiaz Ali: No, no.
Farah Khan: If I don’t scream, people think something is wrong with me. What happened? And they laugh when I scream now; they don’t even take me seriously like he (Imtiaz) is saying.
Anupama Chopra: And you, Dibakar?
Dibakar Banerjee: I am a surprise screamer. Because when no one expects me to scream, I scream then. I have got a huge screaming voice. Huge, huge screaming voice.
Anupama Chopra: And Raju, you don’t look like a screamer.
Rajkumar Hirani: I think you cannot be a director without… (laughs)
Anupama Chopra: Without screaming?
Dibakar Banerjee: I could never imagine you screaming.
Rajkumar Hirani: But it’s more for effect.
Anurag Kashyap: Raju is so nice. He listens to everybody, he screams but after the pack up, in the bathroom. Aaaaaah! (laughs)
Rajkumar Hirani: No, no, you end up screaming but it’s more for effect and never a personal thing.
