When I read The Kitchen Butterfly‘s review of Shiamak Davar‘ss dance show SELCOUTH I knew I HAD to see it. What I witnessed just blew me away! Here are 10 things I thought were particularly awesome 🙂
1. MUMBAI, I THINK YOU’RE READY.
Shiamak invited some of his nearest and dearest to witness the show. He said he usually keeps the first year’s graduating performance to just the students friends and family but felt that perhaps the people of Mumbai (and even Bollywood) were ready for something different. Just how different? Insanely so.
2. Bollywood in the house!
Sushant Singh Rajput (who he affectionately calls “Sushi”), Hema Malini, Prateik Babbar, Subhash “Subi” Ghai, Kim Sharma, Helen, Preeti Jangiani were there…
Even TV & Page 3 represented with Hussain & Tina Kuwajerwala, Rajneesh Duggal, Parizad Zorabian, Pallavi Joshi, Rashmi Uday Singh, Hasina Jethmalani, Gautam & Anas and Marzi Pestonji. Check out all the celebrity spotting here.
3. FLAWLESS Freshers.
Like he said in the Instavideo above: the majority of these dancers were first year students with just three senior dancers taking the lead. “The show had only three to four professional dancers from my dance company, the rest of them were graduates from my one year dance certification program. With the right training and guidance, this is the magic that can be created.”
18 to 21-year-olds with insane levels of fitness, dexterity and clearly mad passion for the art.
4. The Soundtrack
His choice of music was brilliant and I want a copy. The Jiya Lage Na remix and Jesus to a Child + Taal mashup were masterful and the use of U2‘s Numb was sheer genius.
5. PROPs
Props for your props Mr. Davar! Somehow he always comes up with these cool malleable props that get seamlessly integrated into his acts! Like this.
6. Selcouth – Rare, Unusual, Marvellous and WondeRful
That’s what this word – Selcouth – (which I’ve never heard before) actually means and I have to say it fits pretty perfectly! The show was all those things and then some. Which is why this standing ovation was completely well-deserved!
