Best known for playing one of Bollywood’s most notorious villains, actor Gulshan Grover takes the plunge into comedy with Sooper Se Ooper, which releases this Friday, 25th October.
In an exclusive conversation with Team MissMalini, Gulshan Grover said, “I play the role of an eccentric painter, artist, educationist; a person who is always selflessly giving back to society. My character is very loosely based on the legendary artist, MF Husain and is seen wearing kurtas and sporting long white hair.
In the film, my character’s selflessness frightens everybody and Vir Das (who plays my nephew) wants me for his own selfish needs. Even the villain is out to get me because my selflessness foils his plans. My character has renounced everything and has no materialistic greed.”
When we asked Grover how he prepared for this role, he told us, “I have many memories of meeting Husain. He was a very selfless person who cared about art more than money. He was the only artist I know who would stop to paint a wall even on a road, without expecting monetary gains. And once, when I met him in London, he made a sketch on a napkin for my son. He was very selfless.”
Adds Grover, “I have also combined the eccentricity of Mahesh Bhatt and Naseeruddin Shah to add dimension to my character.”
And finally, what’s different about Sooper Se Ooper? “Well, it’s a quirky film and it’s the situations in the story line that make it funny. It’s not a nonsense comedy!”
Point taken, Mr. Grover!
