Patan Patola is an extremely intricate and difficult weave, and is only made in three centers across all of India. A single saree can take up to a year and a half to make with complicated yarn patterns and natural dyes. It takes extreme precision, and years of experience.
At Lakme Fashion Week, designer Gaurang Shah‘s collection, entitled Stridhan, was a celebration of this timeless and ancient weave. We saw beautifully detailed anarkalis, lehengas and ghararas with ten-to-twelve meters of flair, and sarees draped in rural styles.
“By amalgamating this exotic fabric with my signature fabric – khadi – I wanted to give a whole new dimension to the patola. It has been accentuated with Parsi gara embroidery, Kanjeevaram borders, gota work and fabric textures,” says Gaurang.
