Three stalwarts of Indian cinema – Simi Garewal, Anil Kapoor and Hema Malini – came together in Mumbai last night to announce the Yash Chopra Memorial Award.

The award, dedicated to the memory of Yash Chopra, will be bestowed in recognition of an individuals’s contribution to arts and culture.
Simi Garewal described the award as “… something similar to the Dadasaheb Phalke awards. Most of the younger generation isn’t aware of the significance of the Phalke awards. With Yash Chopra and an awards in his name, people of all ages will connect and creativity will be encouraged.”
The award’s first recipient will be Lata Mangeshkar, whose songs have featured prominently in Yash Chopra films. The ceremony will be held on October 19th.
