Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is out in theatres today, and although Sonam Kapoor has only a small role in it, it’s a film she feels strongly about. We caught up with her recently to speak about all things BMB, so she tells us why she decided to do the film, similarities between her and her character, and how much she wants to work with Divya Dutta.
Team MissMalini (Team MM): Why did you agree to do Bhaag Milkha Bhaag?
Sonam Kapoor (SK): I really loved the script. I think it was a beautiful script. I have a very, very small role… I have, like, one song and one scene. But it was something I really wanted to do, because I wanted to work with Rakeysh Mehra again, I wanted to work with Farhan Akhtar. And I think Prasoon Joshi has written a brilliant script.
Team MM: What was it like working with Rakeysh Mehra again?
SK: It was amazing, I feel like it’s home whenever I’ve worked with him.
Team MM: Since you’ve done quite a few films between the time you last worked with him [Delhi 6], did he notice anything different in you?
SK: He just thought I got better. So I was like, “Obviously, in three years I’m not going to get worse.” [laughs]
Team MM: Did you approach the role with a lot more confidence?
SK: Yeah, I think with time, with knowledge, you become a lot more confident. But I’m always willing to learn, willing to improve, and that’s what he wanted me to do.
Team MM: What was your favourite part of the film?
SK: My favourite part of the movie is the scenes when Farhan’s in the army. I saw the film yesterday, and even though I’m a little part of the film, I have to say it’s one of the best films I have seen. I think this film is going to be iconic; it’ll go down in history. I think Farhan Akhtar, Rakeysh Mehra and Prasoon Joshi have outdone themselves. I think Divya Dutta is the best thing about this film. She is the most wonderful actress, and I hope to share a frame with her one day.
Team MM: What’s the most special thing about Biroo and Milkha’s relationship?
SK: The most special thing about Biroo and Milkha is, I think, they’re innocence. The innocence between the two of them, the simplicity of their love.
Team MM: Are there any similarities between Biroo and you?
SK: No. Their only similarity is their fascination for Milkha. [laughs]
