It is kind of rare and awesome to attend the launch of a super sleek smartphone and realise that it’s being launched by an Indian company. Move over <insert your choice International mobile brand here> your daddy just came to town (and he’s 100% brown.)
So here are some of the features that definitely stood out for me for their ingenuity and fun factors (and while I know some other mobile brands offer similar speaks I’m still jazzed that this baby is desi.) I know I keep stressing this, but I’m really proud that we’ve come so far. I remember when I first moved to Bombay in 2000 and was getting my very first mobile phone (yes, I’m that old) one of my friends convinced me to go for BPL Mobile because their whole philosophy (as the Big B himself told us) was “Be Indian – Buy Indian” and I totally did! And it has always struck me that I’ve never had that option come up in a very compelling way since.
MissMalini’s Top 7 #GeekChic Features of the Canvas 4
Now remember these aren’t all the specs and I’d just sound silly rattling of that it’s a quad core processor with 1GB RAM and 16GB internal memory and is based on the Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean operating system 🙂 so bear with me while I go the girly route now…
Of course all the geeks in the house (including me) were live tweeting EVERYTHING with the hashtag #MicromaxCanvas4 and Micromax tweeted right back!
1. Aluminium casing & scratch proof glass looks and feels good (question is, how does it handle that whole falling down thing?) Love that the whole casing is also the phone’s antenna!
2. Swipe up and down on the video screen to change volume & brightness. (I’m actually amazed how often I change my screen’s brightness. Most often to preserve battery!)
3. Smart gestures: I love that the phone goes silent if you place it face down. No more embarrassed fumbling with your phone during meetings! (Also you can go to speaker phone by extending the phone out on your palm.)
4. 13 mega pixel rear camera with a multiple burst shot feature that lets you take 99 pics in one click. Amazing for me and all the blink-and-you-miss-it celebrity spotting opportunities in my line of work! (Plus 5 mega pixel front face shooter, um yay #selfie!)
5. First ever Vertical Panaroma so you can take tall pictures without loosing heads 🙂 also awesome because Instagram has a new feature that lets you post vertical pix now too instead of putting you in a box!
6. Simultaneous video view, plus look away from the video to pause streaming. Amazing for master multi-taskers who try to do #everythingallatonce
7. Video pinning which allows you to watch videos while you text, check your mail or tweet! (That’s how I like to blog anyway, with the TV on in the back!)
Btw, I also thought it was adorable how Chitrangda Singh conducted herself at the launch. She was charming, bright-eyed and beautiful (get her look here) and didn’t come across at all rehearsed or dorky. She was just asking all the same cute questions your average girl would ask as Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma blazed through a multitude of new features with so much pride and passion it made everybody happy!
PS. To the emcee Rochelle Rao, I thought you also did a fabulous job 🙂
My favorite part was when Rahul asked Chitrangda how she would address a very special fan in the crowd and she tentatively blew a kiss and unlocked her phone!
Wanna see the video?
And finally, I have to agree with Chitrangda that the awesome price point for a phone whose competitors cost nearly double exponentially massifies it. As Rahul explained, their whole mission at Micromax is “the Massification of Technology” so it’s affordable for a larger pool of people from all walks of life. And which also means that for people like me who are addicted to technology for work and play, I no longer have to wait two years to upgrade my uber expensive mobile phone. Plus I can be a little less paranoid about it falling out of my hands in the hustle bustle of events – so what if I spill a little Vodka RedBull on it now and again? (All extremely commonly occurring situations in my life, FYI).
What’s the damage? A very affordable (as far as smart phones come) 17,999rs plus a free touch screen cover worth 3,000rs. So #geekchic!
All in all, thank you Micromax, you make me proud 🙂 now excuse me while I run this shpiel by the husband in a bid to convince him to buy me one for Independence Day! xoxo
