Chennai-based designer, Rehane, has always been on my favourite list and I make it a point to attend her show at Lakme Fashion Week. I like Rehane’s work because it’s edgy and zany (just like the lady, herself) and her look is extremely international.
Here are five things which I particularly liked at her show, yesterday:
Calligraphy Prints: The use of Islamic Chinese or Sanskrit calligraphy on an outfit gives it a “spiritual” dimension even though the words may be from a poem or a quote by a famous person. It keeps everybody guessing (especially if they can’t read the script) and becomes a conversational topic. And isn’t that what fashion should be about?
Surface Texturing: I’m always partial to designers who use various forms of surface texturing on their clothes – especially if it is hand-done and not run-of-the-mill zari, zardozi, sequin, crystal work that has become so common-place. Rehane has made her garments multi-dimensional with ruffles and floral embroidery – thus giving her designs a boho-chic appeal.
The Lingerie Look: I love this lingerie-style look of relaxed pyjama-style pants and a sleeveless cover-all with frilly detailing.
Floral Embroidery: If it’s summer, florals are IN and thankfully, Rehane uses her blooms to brighten up her silhouettes in a gypsy-style.
Indo-Fusion: The Indo-fusion look is a permanent fixture on the Indian fashion scene. Rehane gives her look a twist by using a tube top and metallic tights with a transparent embroidered kurti and dupatta worn over it. All perfect to wear as separates, as well!
